Our Ameraucana Chickens
Ameraucana is one of our most popular breed of chickens here on the farm. We are proud to own Paul Smith and The Gipsy Hen (former owner Rachel) birds as our foundational flock. We have been members of The Ameraucana Breeder Club since early 2019 and breed to meet the standard of perfection (SOP). We are committed to preserving and retaining the wonderful features of this amazing, unique breed. We breed for conformation, egg color, and temperament.
The Ameraucana chicken breed originates from Chile blue egg layers called Aracuanas. Ameraucanas were bred to retain the blue egg gene while eliminating the lethal alleles common to their parent breed.
The Ameraucana breed was admitted in the APA Standards of Perfection (SOP) in 1984. The last color variety to be admitted in the APA was the Lavender, also known as Self-Blue.
We presently carry two varieties which translates into four colors recognized by the APA; BBS Ameraucanas: For newbies, BBS stands for blue, black, and splash. Since then, we have continued their great work and have developed our own lines of BBS Americuana. We currently set up our pens by color, so when ordering hatching eggs, you will receive a mix from all three pens. Likewise, when you order chicks from us, you may get a clutch of all three colors. These are large fowl, laying 250 - 280 large eggs in various shades of blue, including blueish green. Very docile and gentle chickens.
The other popular variety is the Self-Blue variety, widely known as “Lavender Ameraucana” Ameraucana is a stunning breed of muffed, bearded, and tailed chickens that lay blue eggs. Ameraucana is one of the friendliest chicken breeds you can own. Their pea comb makes them the ideal poultry to raise in both hot and cold climates. Ameraucanas are extremely hardy and healthy chickens. You can expect 4-5 eggs per week out of your hens. Chicks are sold unsexed. Minimum order of 5 (five) chicks for local pick up.
Local pick up only. We do not ship birds! All orders of chicks are pre-orders! Chicks are sold unsexed. Orders are filled by the order in which payment is received. We will contact to you let you know when we are setting the eggs for your chicks and give you an anticipated hatch date. When your chicks hatch, we vaccinate them, unless requested otherwise on the form during checkout, and reach out to you to schedule your appointment for pick up. To place an order, use the dropdown menu to select the color and quantity. You can mix and match.
Once you are notified that your birds are ready to be picked up, it is up to you to have their brooder or coop ready and to make arrangements to pick them up by the deadline agreed upon. Should life happens and you are not able to take care of the birds you pre-ordered, we will give you credit for the amount paid up-to-date for a future purchase. Please understand we are not able to refund any orders/pre-orders. The only time, a refund applies is when we are not able to deliver the product (Ex. theft, fertility issues, hatch rate issue, fire, flock demise, bird illness, death of breeder, etc). There is a $5 fee for each bird, each day that is here past the deadline. No exceptions. You must order a minimum of 3 chicks from months June-September, and 5 chicks any other time throughout the year.
Feeding: We recommend feeding non-medicated starter grower 20%. We recommend Swans Feed Mill in Zephyrhills. The feed is freshly milled and much better quality than what it is offered at the store, even though it is conventional feed.
