Our Breeding Philosophy

We focus on preserving original traits of the breed, strengthening each generation, and producing poultry that reflects the history, function, and beauty of its breed.

Our program combines carefully managed flock breeding with selective pairings to maintain genetic diversity while advancing the traits that matter most. Every bird considered for our breeding program is observed over time and evaluated for structure, breed type, temperament, vigor, fertility, productivity, and overall soundness before earning a place in our breeding pens.

We breed with the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in mind, placing particular emphasis on correct conformation, balance, breed characteristics, and appropriate egg color. Our goal is to produce birds that are equally suited for serious breeding programs, FFA and youth poultry projects, exhibition homes, and families who simply want exceptional representatives of the breed.

We understand that knowledgeable buyers want more than a bird with an attractive appearance. They want confidence in its background, its health, and the decisions that shaped it. For that reason, we invest significant time in evaluating our breeding stock, studying family lines, observing offspring, and making deliberate breeding decisions designed to improve future generations rather than chasing short-term production.

Health, resilience, and longevity are central to our program. Our birds are raised with attention to nutrition, clean housing, biosecurity, movement, and natural development. We provide premium-quality, non-GMO, soy-free feed and strengthen our feeding program with carefully selected nutritional support, including fermented feed, beneficial probiotics, quality protein sources, balanced minerals, and healthy fats.

Young birds are raised from day one with close observation and thoughtful care. As they mature, they transition from the brooder room to grass-based systems, mobile housing, and chicken tractors that are moved regularly onto fresh ground. This approach encourages natural behavior, exercise, cleaner living conditions, and strong physical development.

We also use preventative management practices appropriate to our farm, including routine flock testing through the National Poultry Improvement Plan, vaccination against fowl pox for selected young stock, and ongoing evaluation for health, vigor, and reproductive performance. Breeding birds that do not meet our standards for soundness, temperament, or long-term quality are not retained in the program.

Our breeding stock undergoes testing and health monitoring to reduce the risk of passing preventable disease concerns to future generations. While no breeder can promise perfection, we believe responsible breeding requires transparency, careful selection, and a commitment to making each generation stronger than the one before it.

Our Story

Vitoria Farms began with eight tiny chicks and a simple family project. I named the farm after my first born, Vitoria:-).

One day, my husband came home from the feed store with a box of chicks. He thought raising them would be a fun way for our daughters to learn where food comes from and experience the responsibility of caring for animals.

Eight chicks were all it took.

Before long, we were under what can only be described as a chicken spell. Cleaning the coop became enjoyable. Collecting fresh eggs felt like discovering a gift each morning. We loved watching the flock race toward us for treats and found ourselves spending more time outdoors, sipping coffee while surrounded by chickens.

When we unexpectedly lost one of our first birds to a dog accident, I was heartbroken and convinced that our little flock needed a few more companions. Seven chickens soon became 29, then 40, then 400. At one point, our farm was home to more than 625 birds.

What began as a small family adventure grew into a calling.

Today, Vitoria Farms is a well-established, small-scale family farm located in the charming community of Dade City, Florida. Our farming operation is based on four acres at our family residence, with access to additional separately owned pastures totaling approximately 12 acres.

We specialize in the preservation and responsible breeding of heritage and rare chicken breeds, with an emphasis on health, vitality, temperament, and correct breed conformation. We also raise Coturnix quail, Ancona ducks, Pilgrim geese, Nigerian Dwarf goats, and cattle.

Our animals are truly a family effort. I was a public-school teacher through June of 2026, and my husband is a senior communications technician who works from home. Vitoria is currently attending Aveda Institute to become a certified beautician/hairdresser and Savanna will attend Academy of the Farm for her 9th grade forward. Our son, Justin drives for UPS. I am now in charge of the farm full time.

Many of our chicks begin their lives right here at Vitoria Farms, hatching from carefully selected breeding stock. We raise our birds from day one and feed our flock premium-quality, non-GMO, soy-free feed. Our goal is not simply to produce more birds, but to thoughtfully raise healthy, strong representatives of each breed.

Movement and access to fresh ground are central to our management practices. Once they are old enough and properly prepared for outdoor life, our growing birds transition from the brooder room to pasture-based housing. They continue developing on grass in mobile coops and handmade chicken tractors built by our family. These shelters are moved on a regular schedule, often daily, to provide fresh ground, natural enrichment, and a cleaner growing environment.

Before being introduced to the field, most of our eight-week-old chicks are vaccinated against fowl pox. Birds raised specifically for meat or for our free-range, pasture-raised egg flock may be managed differently.

Vitoria Farms participates in the National Poultry Improvement Plan under NPIP number 58-2577E. Our breeding flock is tested twice each year for poultry diseases of concern within Florida, and our farm maintains AI/PT-clean status.

We are registered with the Florida Department of State and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, where we maintain the appropriate limited poultry and egg license for the sales of farm fresh eggs and pasture raised whole chickens We are also registered with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and maintain a game-bird farm permit.

Fertile hatching eggs are shipped throughout the 48 contiguous United States. In 2026, we were certified to ship to Puerto Rico. Chicks, started birds, pullets, and adult poultry are available for local pickup by appointment. Whole dressed chickens are offered several times throughout the year on a preorder basis.

As of summer of 2026, pick ups are now available Monday through Saturday, by appointment only.

Although our farm has grown far beyond those first eight chicks, the heart of Vitoria Farms has remained the same. We still believe in slowing down, stepping outside, caring for God’s creation, and appreciating the simple joy of gathering a fresh egg or watching a chick take its first steps.

You do not need hundreds of chickens or acres of land to begin. Sometimes, all it takes is a small coop, a willingness to learn, and a few little chicks to open the door to an entirely new way of life.

It is important you understand we do not conduct farm tours, provide step by step assistance in starting a farm, or give you advice on what to do with a sick bird. We are not a rescue or bird sanctuary. We do not bring in free birds from anywhere. We are breeders. Chickens are my therapy and a business passion I have grown from the ground up. I am still learning myself. It is hard work 365 days a year.
